How to Do the Hard Thing

How To’s designed to get you unstuck and pull you into alignment with your highest self.

We all want to be happy.

It’s one of those universal things.

Through my work as a coach, I’ve noticed the only reason anyone seems to want anything is because we think it’s going to make us happy.

But on our journeys, we encounter things that stop us in our tracks.

What are those things for you?

What’s holding you back?

What hard thing would you have to do in order to have what you want and be the person you want to be?

Now that you’ve got it in your mind, let’s get started!

1. Get out of The Waiting Place

In “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss, he talks about The Waiting Place.

He writes, “You can get so confused that you’ll start in to race down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace and grind on for miles across weirdish wild space, headed, I fear, toward a most useless place. The Waiting Place.”

He goes on to describe the people in The Waiting Place and all the many things they’re waiting for.

Then he writes to us as the reader, “NO! That’s not for you! Somehow you’ll escape all that waiting and staying. You’ll find the bright places where Boom Bands are playing!”

Don’t stay in the waiting place, I beseech you!

Doing the hard thing is your escape.

Where are your bright places?

Where are your Boom Bands playing?

Let your own unique current of Inner Knowing guide you.

Find the courage to do the thing you’re scared of doing by reminding yourself what’s at stake if you don’t take any action at all.

2. Make the decision to be happy

The other day, Letti and I were watching old episodes of America’s Got Talent and we came across Jane Marczewski’s (Nightbirde’s) audition which is one of my favorites.

She had been fighting breast cancer for years and prior to her audition, she was given just a 2% chance of survival.

Her mindset around her illness was so incredibly moving.

People wanted to know how she could even go on given her circumstances.

She said, “You can’t wait until life isn’t hard anymore before you decide to be happy.”

Sometimes being alive is painful, and making the decision to be happy feels like a foolish or futile one.

We can hold space for that while at the same time holding space for our ability to find joy.

Deciding to be happy puts us in alignment with the things we want and motivates us to do whatever it takes to get there.

If you need some inspiration to take a challenging action or make a difficult decision, remind yourself of this pact with yourself to choose happiness!

3. Become the kind of person who would have what you want

This is the rub right here.

Looking at our goals through the lens of “who would I have to be to get there?” is an incredibly powerful tool.

There’s a show called Undercover Billionaire that illustrates this point.

The premise is that entrepreneurs who have already made billions are given just $100 to create a million dollar business in 90 days.

Although that seems completely wild to me, someone with that mindset and skill set is able to pull it off!

They already are who they need to be to reach their goals.

So, that is my question to you:

Are you the version of you who can attain and keep the life you want?

Most of us know what to do – we just don’t do it.

We hold ourselves back.

We blame it on circumstances.

We push back our timelines on decisions and actions.

But what would the most empowered version of you do if they were in your position?

I bet they’d do the hard thing!

You have all the resources you need to be whoever you want to be.
